Baby seats on the back of a bike are one of the most dangerous contraptions we have ever seen invented for the bicycle. There are so many reasons that they are a bad idea but we'll try to get them into some kind of logical order that will convince you never to be involved with one.
Just to give you an idea of HOW STRONGLY we feel about this we should let you know that the Bloomfield Bicycle Company charges $100 to install a rear child carrier onto a bicycle and we require the owner of the bicycle and the parent of the child who is going to ride in that seat to sign a waiver that acknowledges the inherent dangers and releases us from any liability.
First of all, the seat is at the back, out of the rider's view. The child can easily undo the buckles and stand up for a better view before anyone knows what's happenning.
Because the seat is so high up and the child's center of gravity is also so high up it makes the bike extremely unstable. With the center of gravity so high, your beautiful baby gets the worst of any whiplash effect as the bike wobbles side to side. Their certified bike helmet becomes an added weight on their noggin to thwack from side to side. (think pendulum effect)
The bike is unstable and if there is (heaven forbid) an accident it is almost physically impossible for the rider to protect the child from a road/child related incident. The bicycle is so unstable that it is difficult for the rider to control the bike, making quick avoidance of accidents or unforeseen car related interactions nearly impossible. And if any of those interactions take place at the REAR of the bicycle the child IS NOT PROTECTED IN ANY WAY.
And these are the "worst case scenario" considerations. The bike is so cumbersome and unwieldy that even just getting started and stopped becomes a task fraught with danger.
The reinforced roll-cage of a quality baby trailer protects your most precious cargo from impacts and keeps them comfy and safe on a suspended seat with a five point harness. The screen protects them from gravel, bugs and road spray. The windows keeps small fingers out of wheels and the universal hitch ensures that the trailer stays upright. There's so much more, but we're sure you get the idea. And if you don't ... feel free to contact us and we'll talk your ear off about it!

There are some baby seats available that are mounted on the FRONT of the bike directly behind the handlebars, as below. These seats are the only ones that we will install, and are the only ones that we feel can be used safely on a regular basis.
