frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the KCCR

What is a Cribbage Ride?

A very good question indeed! The concept is the same as a Poker Run. Courses are laid out and riders follow them, using maps provided, reaching checkpoints along the way. At each checkpoint one playing card is given to each rider (or in some cases tokens representing cards are given) These cards or "hand" is then matched up into the best cribbage hand possible. The folks with the five or so best hands of all win great prizes.

How does a Cribbage Ride work?

This event takes place on two routes. Riders follow one of the mapped courses and pass at least four checkpoints (at most: six). As each registered rider arrives at a checkpoint they will receive a token (or card). When the rider has completed their chosen course and returned to the Picton Fairgrounds (in the Curling Club) they will be dealt one card for each token. They will choose the four cards which make the best possible cribbage hand and discard any extras. Riders who collect six tokens will receive six cards and be able to discard two. So you definitely have better winning odds if you pick up six tokens.

What are the routes and how long are they?

Click here to view a copy of the map from 2007. Keep dropping by for more info about 2008. We can say for sure that there will be a 100km route and a 50km route and they will both be ... great!!

The roads in Prince Edward County are fairly quiet, especially in early fall. There are lots of light, rolling hills and a few climbs; but not much real altitude gain on either route. There are lovely lake vistas, and great rolling scenery throughout both routes. The fall colours are underway at the end of September.

What are the roads like? What kind of bike should I ride?

All the plotted routes travel on paved roads in Prince Edward County. Road bikes are completely suitable as well as hybrids and comfort bikes. Knobby tired mountain bikes and double suspension are not required, but are perfectly acceptable, if you like.

Safety approved helmets are required.

If you register on the event day (October 4, 2008) you'll pay full pop for entry. This is our effort to encourage everyone to PRE-REGISTER (please, PRE-REGISTER)!

How do I pre-register?

Pre-registration will open in May, 2009. You may pre-register in one of four ways.

#2: Contact us (email or phone 613-476-4379 or 613-393-5270) and we'll mail you an event flyer so that you can pursue option number one.

How do I register on event day?

Registration will be open at the the Curling Club, (beside the Community Centre in the Picton Fairgrounds) on October 3, 2009, starting at 8am.

Where is the start?

The event will start and finish at the Curling Club Fairgrounds in Picton, Ontario. Direction maps to the Fairgrounds in Picton are available on this site as well.

What time does it start?

The first wave of riders (the 100km riders) will leave from the Fairgrounds at 9AM. The folks riding the shorter course will head on at 10:30AM. On-site registration will be open by 8AM.

What kind of children's programs does the Kiwanis support?

Kiwanis International has a mandate to support children's programs. Locally the Picton Kiwanis is involved with buying bed kits for kids in third world countries (a program called Sleeping Children Around the World) and they give financial support to local youth teams and they send a number of kids each year to the Salvation Army summer camp and provide graduation awards to our high school's graduates, and support the Terrific Kids program in our local elementary schools.

What if I don't have a bicycle?

Bicycles are available to rent (at a discounted rate) from the Bloomfield Bicycle Company for the event. Contact them directly (613.393.1060 or bbc@bloomfieldbicycle.ca) to make resevations. Bikes can be picked up in advance or delivered to riders at the Curling Club at 8:30AM on event day.

What if I get tired and want to short-cut the course?

This is a fun event, not a race with rules and sanctioned points or anything like that. You will have a good quality road map. If you decide that you want to take a short cut to get back to the finish please feel free to do so – but make sure you pick up at least four tokens to complete your hand!

What if I get hurt or I get too tired to finish?

There will be communication abilities at each checkpoint – as well as food and water. If you need assistance or transportation, folks at the checkpoints will be able to call for a van to fetch you back to the Curling Club. There are also sweep riders at the back of each route with first aid supplies for both you and your bike. If you are unable to continue just wait and help will be along. You might consider bringing along a cell phone as well.

What if I don't know how to play cribbage?

When you return to the Curling Club to exchange your tokens for cards there will be highly qualified, unbiased cribbage experts there to help you figure out the best hand possible.

What time is lunch served? What time are the prizes awarded?

We start serving lunch after 12PM (or when the first riders return, whichever comes first!) and have plenty for everyone.

Prizes are awarded once most folks have arrived back at the Curling Club. Check back here for a more detailed schedule of events later in the season.
